Through Their Eyes - Southwest Texas

So for Thanksgiving we went to Southwest Texas for some National Park exploring. What a gem Big Bend National Park is... Dear God, it was beautiful and remote and fun. Did I mention remote? Yep, we put in the miles on our rental, all worth it, though. Here are some of our kids' favorite activities from our time in Southwest Texas.

Hiking - Our favorite hike being Hot Spring Trail. What's not to love?... Hiking by a canyon divided by the Rio Grande and ending up by a hot spring...

Chisos Basin Trail, another favorite

Animal Spotting

Mule deer

Lots of Roadrunners... Fast little suckers... I did not get one picture of them. Can I tell you the times the Looney Tunes cartoon came to mind, ha... Lots.

Cruising around the park - Because it's so fricking large...

Some of our favorite stops: Santa Elena's Canyon for rock skipping on the Rio Grande - There, check that off the list.
Horsing around the panoramic viewpoint for Mule Ears Peaks.

More Junior Ranger badges... What are we up to now, 20?

Staying in la casita - Marfa. This lovely little house was so cool with a detached bathroom and everything, is that fun or what? (found via airbnb - We love airbnb, we've used them on our trips to Istanbul and Milan)

Lazing around Marfa's downtown and browsing the galleries and museums. Who would have thought? This little town in the middle of Texas could be such a mecca for art and and everything hip. Want to know what the kids loved the most? The cool installations made out of tumbleweeds...

And speaking of tumbleweeds, playing with them was pretty fun - because, its all about the little things friends.
Playing around the Donald Judd concrete installation at the Chinati Foundation - Marfa

Eating - We did a lot of picnics but also took advantage of a few eateries in Marfa. Food Shark (for the hipster crowd) and Mandos (for the local crowd) were both pretty awesome.

Others not photographed: Stargazing. This was my absolute favorite. It cannot be described with words... You must go to Southwest Texas and experience it on your own. I was awed friends... Simply put.

So you had a great Thanksgiving? Ours was awesome doing all of our favorite things... Hiking, picnicking, animal spotting, stargazing (this friends was a particularly favorite of mine - I don't think I've seen so many stars before in my life - no joke here - it was simply amazing).

Have a great start of your week everybody! More pictures coming up

"A portrait of my children, once a week, every week."
Currently reading...

He: Diary of a Wimpy Kid

She: The Diary of Anne Frank. I read this book when I was 13... Is it too early for my 11-year-old to start reading it? She seems into it so far.

How about that? They are both reading some kind of a diary... I think she'll get more out of it, Oh yeah, she will.

Hey, Thanksgiving this week, can you believe it? Oh my... You know what that means, right? Christmas is just around the corner. Bring the parties, lunches, cookie exchanges... The gym is going to see lots of me so I'm able to pull it through. Lord have mercy.

Hanging on to the last bits of Fall... Cold fronts have been hitting us earlier than usual this year. The kids are holding on to the pretty fall days by doing some hiking and putt-putting with their dad while I am gone for my weekend away with girlfriends. Everybody is happy, it all about the balance, is it not?

Fall is so pretty here in the South. Check out some pictures from my weekend away in my Instagram feed

Have a great week everybody!

The changes a week can bring...

He: Sick as a dog for a whopping total of one day (I kid you not)... Ha, if only my colds lasted that long.

She: Warming up by the fire after a particularly cold day. Winter is just around the corner.

Happy week everybody. Stay healthy wherever you are!

"A portrait of my children, once a week, every week."

This week, it was all about Halloween festivities!

He: My easy going kid decided to break his third year straight of being a ninja in order to be a boxer for Halloween (bonus... He had everything already so I did not have to brave the store, oh mercy). Daddy took the opportunity to do some reflex practicing before hitting the street in the hunt for candy... Oh boy, this year's loot was out of control.

She: Carving a pumpkin is a serious business... It requires lots of concentration. My artist daughter, where could she possibly get this from?

Happy week everybody. Stay warm wherever you are!

She: Behold... Going shopping with a pair of tweens can give you a headache (wait, maybe it was the copious amounts of the wine consumed the night before... Regardless, I don't think one helped the other)

He: Roasting marshmallows on the fire... such a nice way to end our weekend

Have a great week everybody

"A portrait of my children, once a week, every week for a year"

Fall is finally making an appearance here in the South, sweaters are being dusted off and can I tell you what a beautiful time of the year it is for us? The best!

Something about Fall that invigorates you and makes you want to go out and play... As you can imagine our weekend was packed full with activities like: concert going (as in two of them), festival attending (See pictures from the last time we attended the Crabapple Antique Festival here, can you believe how long it's been?) and lots of delicious comfort food eating... I hope your weekend was lovely too.
