Thunder and lightning

Few weeks back, while away at the beach we had some night storms. I quickly grabbed my camera with the hope of capturing one the lighting bolts. After a couple of tries I was able to get one...Cool, huh?

Anna Pavlova

That is the name of the Russian ballerina from which the delicious dessert Pavlova comes from. I had to do a posting about it because it is so delicious. I tried it for the first time in Australia (with passion fruit drizzle nonetheless!). Words cannot describe how delicious it was (I also had it in ice cream...Triple yum!). I have recreated it many times since. Here is a good recipe for it if you too want to give it a try. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

Pictures from the weekend

No computers, no phones, just plain camping fun. Take a look at what we did:

We got there at dusk and took a quick picture at Black Rock Overlook
The next morning is was all about hiking and looking for bugs

and hanging by the fire, of course that meant S'mores
We were all into them, even Zeus

And speaking of Zeus, he was a big attraction for the kids! M even got to ride him like a horse. Such a gentle and nice dog
This made me giggle, my boy was so intrigued and worried... "Mami, we should not go that way...There are bears"
Before heading home we stopped to pick up some homemade jam and of course boiled peanuts... Yum!
Nothing better than spending the weekend with family and friends, laughing, eating delicious food and enjoying nature. We love camping! I can't wait for our trip in the spring

Menu for the week

Chicken packets with mushrooms, scallions and bacon/vegetables on the grill
Campfire chilli con carne
Ravioli with herb sauce/Salad
Ribolita/Salad

Breakdown:
Aldi/Kroger $62
Costco $7
Super H $5

We are going on our mandatory fall camping trip to the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia... So excited about that! To make our lives easier (and enjoy some delicious homemade foods) we are bringing our food premade and prepacked from home. For the ckicken packets I use extra strengh aluminum foil, then I lay a couple of strips of bacon, chicken breast, sliced mushrooms, scallions, a drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper. Wrap them up in a little packet and keep it in your cooler until it is ready to be cooked on the grill. For the chilli I make my three bean chilli con carne ahead of time and and keep it in the freezer. I then put it in the cooler until I am ready to warm it up in a pot on the campfire... So good. Of course, we will be having smore's to top it all off... Total campling bliss...
The weather is supposed to be wonderful. See you back here on Monday with some pictures from the weekend.

Homemade bread

I did it! I have finally baked my first loaf of bread. The smell in the house is intoxicating. I can really get used to this (actually, I cannot get it out of my mind, I want to get this homemade goodness all of the time, we are making some more next weekend!). I tried this recipe  (next time I will be making this one). Having my new mixer helped a lot.

And yes, that is the strawberry jam I made from our trip to the strawberry farm last spring.

Things I want to make

This project is so beautiful and simple. I have been saving all the glass jars that make it into our house. I have accumulated a nice collection of jars of all sizes. All you need is scrapbooking paper (of which I also have plenty) and mod podge. I think these decorated glass containers will be great to store supplies in the kids playroom and to store scrapbooking or sewing supplies in my craft room. Check out the process here - it is so simple. I'll be posting pictures once I get mine done.

Let it be (little) light!

Mastering low light photography without a tripod... It can be daunting - I had to give it a try.

So you know, all these pictures were taken with my trusty point and shoot. What a great little camera that is... I totally recommend it!

Menu for the week

Spaghetti with garlic, parsley and tomatoes from the garden/Salad
Arroz con Pollo/Salad
Gazpacho with fancied-up grilled cheese sandwiches (I am using homemade whole wheat bread and combination of brie and swiss cheeses)
15 bean soup/Salad

Breakdown:

Aldi/Kroger $ 32
Costco $ 24
Super H $ 7

The spaghetti recipe comes from V's new book called "Fanny at Chez Panisse" by Alice Waters. A lovely book I won by entering a comment on the uber fabulous blog Raising Foodies. V loves it so much she wants to read it (and make recipes from it) all the time.
I totally recommend this book if you have kids that are interested in cooking. The illustrations are fabulous. I think I will use it as the inspiration for Miss V birthday party next year... A little chef party (She can choose a menu and invite a couple of her friends over to cook it together)... I am excited already

Happy weekend everyone!

Boy against the machine

Ok, don't judge me, I just had a little flash back to my college days, if you know what I mean. Any way, back to now. Check out these pictures of M fascinated by this excavator...We could not get him to move. This fascination must be engraved on a boy's brain as they are being developed in the womb because Miss V does not care about it...

I want to remember

Every night when we put the kids to bed we read them a book and sing a song. One night while looking around their bedrooms I started to think how much their rooms have changed along with their choices of books. So I thought that the best way to preserve this moment in time is to snap some pictures of the little details that make their bedrooms special...right now...Before they grow up {so fast} and change again before I notice

I love markets

Especially if they are in foreign countries. Check out all these pretty flowers.

And all this delicious food? It makes me want to go on a picnic

Are you hungry yet? By the way, I am not exaggerating when I say that French strawberries are the best. They are so sweet and fragrant. By far the best strawberries I have ever had!
