Pictures from the weekend - Strawberry picking

I took the kids strawberry picking. Strawberries are in season here in Georgia so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to go on a little outing (and to stock up on some of our summer's favorites). We left early to take avantage of the early morning weather (as its getting so hot here in these parts).

Here are some pictures from the day:

Last couple of pictures taken by Miss V... She directed us.. The girl definitely has ideas...

Some tips I learned about strawberries:

  • Leave the caps on the berries until after you wash them.
  • Do not wash the berries until you are ready to eat them.
  • It’s best to store them only 1 or 2 deep in a shallow container.
  • On the drive home, keep berries on a shallow container (I use shallow boxes I picked up at Costco) take them inside immediately to a cool place.
  • For best flavor after refrigerating, allow strawberries to reach room temperature before serving.
  • Leftover berries? Rinse, cap, and crush. Add sugar or not. Store in freezer bags in freezer. Thaw and use in smoothies, shakes, or over desserts for great fresh flavor.
  • Strawberry ice cubes are pretty in punch or in a glass of lemonade. Place a whole, unhulled strawberry in each section of an ice cube tray, then fill with mineral water, punch or lemonade and freeze.
Besides strawberry picking with the kiddos we had dinner with friends and the kids treated me to a yummy breakfast on Sunday morning. What a lovely way to spend the Mother's day weekend!
